Date: April 2-2025

We were there—standing on the rim of one of the Earth’s most active volcanoes, watching a river of fire flow beneath us. Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s legendary “Gateway to Hell,” erupted again in April 2025, and we had the once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness it up close.

But the surprising thing?

It didn’t scare us.

Even as lava bubbled and danced in a massive pit of fire, none of us felt fear. Instead, we felt awe. We were standing above a fiery abyss, but it felt like watching a miracle unfold—raw, real, and completely unforgettable.

What We Experienced

As we hiked through the moon-like landscapes of the Danakil Depression, the glow from the crater welcomed us like a beacon. When we finally reached the top, we were met with a breathtaking sight: the Earth alive, moving, glowing, and rumbling deep within a vast lava-filled hole.

There was no chaos—just nature showing its power in the most mesmerizing way.

Why It’s So Powerful

The eruption was contained in a massive crater, making it safely visible from above.

• The atmosphere was calm, surreal, and peaceful—even in the presence of molten rock.

• Witnessing the glow, the movement, the energy—it felt sacred.

Erta Ale: More Than a Volcano

This volcano is a place of legends. Located in Ethiopia’s Afar region, it’s one of the few places in the world where you can see a lava lake with your own eyes. It’s remote, extreme, and magical.

And now, it’s alive again.
