3-Day Gheralta Camping Trek – Adventure Among Ethiopia’s Sacred Mountains Experience the wild beauty of the Gheralta Mountains like never before with our 3-day camping trek. This tour is perfect for adventurous travelers who want to connect deeply with nature, explore ancient rock-hewn churches, and sleep under the stars in one of Ethiopia’s most stunning landscapes. Day 1: Start Trekking and First Night Camping We depart from Hawzen or Mekelle and drive into the Gheralta region. Our trek begins with a hike to some of the high plateau churches, like Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. After a full afternoon of exploration and stunning views, we set up camp in the mountains, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and spend the night under a beautiful, starry sky. Day 2: Full-Day Trekking and Remote Camping Today is a full day of trekking deep into Gheralta’s dramatic cliffs and hidden valleys. One of the highlights is reaching the breathtaking Abuna Yemata Guh — known for its high-perched church carved into the rock. After visiting this extraordinary site and other lesser-known churches, we hike further into the wilderness and set up our second campsite in a remote and peaceful area. Day 3: Final Morning Trek and Return After breakfast, we hike a final scenic route, exploring more natural beauty and perhaps visiting a final church site depending on timing. After the morning trek, we meet our vehicle and drive back to Mekelle or Hawzen, concluding the unforgettable trekking adventure.
