Mekelle- Dallol- Mekelle

This would be possible if you drive to Dallol from Mekelle  very early in the morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the  localities are mining salt. 1,200 km2 (460 sq mi) the Afar Depression is covered by salt, and salt Look the activity of breaking the salt from the ground, local people are cutting in to rectangular pieces and loading on camels. Danakil is the deepest part of Ethiopia at 116 km below sea level. It stretches between the Red Sea and the foothills of the eastern slopes of Ethiopian plateau. The depression has marvelous pattern of volcanoes, its activity greatly contributing to the formation of the present Rift Valley system. The whole part of this natural wonder is inhabited by the Afar people, nomadic shepherds carrying salt in their caravans up to the Ethiopian Highlands.

Day1: Mekelle – Volcano

We drive from Mekelle to  artale (volcano). Leave after breakfast possibly at 9:00am drive to artale. This is may be one of the roughest roads in the world. The 247 km distance may take about 5 hrs passing through changing landscape of solidified lava rock and sand After passing several small hamlets scattered here and there in this deserted land, you will arrive to Erta Ale camping site,. After a short break and,  before the sunset we will trek for about 20 minutes to Ertale , where we spend few hours watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake with 613 meters above sea level, one of only five in the world; it is notable for being the longest existing lava lake present since the early years of the 20th century. And you will trek back to basic camp basement to spend the night, have a dinner and sleeping under the stars.

Start of your tour into the DANAKIL to ERTA ALE, the famous volcano with it’s bubbling lava lake and the rare possibility of experiencing the nomadic tribe living in this desert- the AFAR people, survivors and warriors in the hottest and one of the lowest places on earth!
